Foreign Currency unlike foreign coins was designed to only last for a short time. Currency printed on Paper, Linen, Silk or other material had no real intrinsic value based on the material used in the manufacture.

 

As such it is the value of the eye appeal and rarity of currency that survived that creates the desire to collect, catalog and own older currency.
